How it works

  1. 1

    Take the photo

With your phone, the whole scoresheet and well lit. If the game takes two sheets, upload both.

  2. 2

    Check only the doubts

If a move is hard to read, we show you the crop and the legal moves that fit. One tap and on you go.

  3. 3

    Take your PGN

Open it in Lichess or ChessBase, or keep it with the rest of your games.

Your scoresheets are safe. We store your scoresheets encrypted in our database, and we will never sell them or share them with third parties without your consent.

Keep it handy at the tournament. Install ChessWiz on your phone and open it like an app, full screen.

Do you run a club or organise a tournament? Upload the scoresheets of the whole round and publish the games that same night.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a chess scoresheet to PGN?

Take a photo of the scoresheet with your phone or upload one from your gallery. ChessWiz reads the handwritten moves, checks that each one is legal and only asks you about the ones it can't read. In a few seconds you have the game in PGN, ready to download.

Does it read handwriting? And carbon copies?

Yes. It's trained on thousands of real tournament scoresheets, written by players with very different handwriting. You can photograph the original or the carbon copy the player keeps.

What notation does the scoresheet need to be in?

Algebraic notation, with the letters of your language: English (K, Q, R, B, N), Spanish (R, D, T, A, C), Catalan, German, French, Italian or Portuguese. You don't need to say which: the PGN always comes out in standard notation.

What if a move is hard to read?

We don't guess: we show you the crop of the scoresheet and the legal moves that fit, and you pick one with a tap. You can also correct any move on the board, mark a crossed-out move or add one that was never written down.

Can I open the game in Lichess, Chess.com or ChessBase?

Yes. PGN is the standard format for chess games: download it and open it in ChessBase or any chess program, or open the game straight in Lichess or Chess.com to analyse it.

Is it free?

Yes: with the Free plan you can convert 5 scoresheets a month without paying anything. If you play a lot or run a club, there are the Pro and Max plans.

Do I need to install an app?

No. ChessWiz works in your phone's or computer's browser. If you want it at hand during tournaments, you can add it to your home screen and open it like an app.
